Lecturer II / Teaching Assistant Professor, Natural Resources and Environmental Science
The Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Science (NRES) at the University of Nevada, Reno invites applications for a continuing, full-time (non-tenure track) Lecturer (II) or Teaching Assistant Professor with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2027. The NRES Department has diverse faculty and students dedicated to solving critical environmental challenges with cutting-edge research. We are a research-intensive Department with a focus on field- and lab-based teaching, aiming to provide students with a foundation in scientific concepts and applied skills for careers in research, outreach and resource management. Reno’s location at the intersection of the northern Sierra and the Great Basin provides close proximity to diverse landscapes for class field trips and other outdoors learning experiences. We offer both undergraduate and graduate programs, with undergraduate degrees in Environmental Science, Forest Ecology and Management, and Wildlife Ecology and Conservation.
The successful candidate will contribute to this mission by teaching a range of lower-division undergraduate courses. Potential courses may include introductory ecology, environmental science, natural resource management, environmental ethics and cultural perspectives on resource management. Teaching may include upper-division courses in the candidate’s area of expertise and service courses for non-majors.
Strong candidates will demonstrate innovative approaches to teaching, resulting in high student engagement and interaction with course materials and have experience training students in scientific writing, quantitative analysis and critical thinking skills. The expected teaching load is 5 to 6 in-person courses per year. Applicants are encouraged to consult our undergraduate curricula, linked to from the NRES departmental website.
We welcome applicants who wish to play an integral role in the undergraduate mission of the department. In addition to classroom instruction, the faculty member will be involved with student engagement, which will include student advising and activities related to student recruitment and retention. Other service duties may include revising curriculum, program and course assessment and course scheduling.
Required Qualifications
Lecturer II – Master’s degree with at least one higher-education degree in a Natural Resources or Environmental Science discipline.
Teaching Assistant Professor - Ph.D. with at least one higher-education degree in a Natural Resources or Environmental Science discipline.
Applicants must be strongly committed to excellence in teaching and student mentoring as well as having a demonstrated interest in innovative teaching.
Preferred Qualifications
Preference will be given to candidates who have taught at least one undergraduate course as primary instructor.
Compensation Grade
Lecturer II (Salary range: $54,800 - $84,400)
Teaching Assistant Professor (Salary range: $63,000 - $96,900)
Department Information
The Department of Natural Resources & Environmental Science (NRES) is a multidisciplinary department within the College of Agriculture, Biotechnology, & Natural Resources (CABNR) that is known for its high research activity and engagement in both basic and applied research. Faculty are recognized as regional, national, and international experts in the fields of wildlife and fish biology, forest and fire ecology, ecohydrology, soils, and environmental science. The Department is committed to high quality education that prepares students for natural resource careers, offering undergraduate degrees in Environmental Science, Wildlife Ecology & Conservation, and Forest Ecology & Management. Students may additionally pursue MS or PhD programs within NRES or in one of three interdisciplinary graduate programs on UNR’s campus (Ecology, Evolution and Conservation Biology; Environmental Sciences and Health; and Hydrologic Sciences). NRES currently supports ~400 undergraduate students as well as 27 MS and 30 PhD students.
