Description

POSITION
One Natural Resources Technician (Seasonal Worker, Full-time, 40 hours/week) position is available with the Colorado State University (CSU) Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML). This position will provide support to the natural resources program at Columbus Air Force Base (AFB), Mississippi. The intent of this position is to provide the successful applicant with exposure to careers in military lands management and natural resources work experience. The technician will contribute to conservation and management efforts at Columbus AFB and learn about the regulatory framework and importance of managing natural resources on Department of Defense lands. Successful candidates will gain entry-level experience on a range of habitat and wildlife management projects under mentorship with natural resource managers at Columbus AFB. Military affiliation is not required to apply for this position.

CEMML is a research, education, and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at CSU. CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. Position Duty Station: Columbus Air Force Base, Mississippi
Columbus AFB is a 4,900-acre United State military installation found eight miles north of Columbus, Mississippi. The installation is tasked with training, equipping, and organizing world-class pilots for international military operations. Columbus AFB’s Environmental Flight is an award winning program that is responsible for ensuring the sustainable management of the base’s undeveloped land, which includes over 180 acres of wetlands, 1,200 acres of commercial forests, and a two-acre lake. The primary focuses for the program include wetlands monitoring and management, forest management, erosion control, water quality management, and threatened and endangered species management. These responsibilities also extend to the 1,080-acre Shuqualak Auxiliary Airfield which is found 50 miles south of the installation.

RESPONSIBILITIES
The Natural Resources Technician will provide support to Columbus AFB’s natural resources program through a variety of invasives species, threatened and endangered species, and wetlands management projects. Invasive species management tasks will mainly consist of GPS mapping and field surveys, and may include GIS work in the office using collected data. Threatened and endangered species tasks will support snapping turtle and bat management, through the collection of water samples and the maintenance of bat boxes respectively. Finally, the wetlands work will produce wetland delineations using field surveys with GPS equipment. Once hired, the technician will be provided with safety training for operating ATVs. A majority of the work will be conducted outdoors, and will entail working alongside other technicians/managers and/or independently, as necessary. CEMML and Columbus AFB will provide the necessary personal protective equipment. The varied management, monitoring, and mapping tasks associated with this position will provide excellent, entry-level experience into the field of natural resource management.


PAY RATE
Pay rate is $35,000-$37,000 annual and the work period will not exceed 140 working days.

Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Must be physically capable of working independently in remote outdoor locations for long periods of time under hot weather conditions. Field activities may include conducting surveys, maintaining mapping equipment, and collecting biological data. These actions will require frequent walking, lifting, pulling, and kneeling.
Pursuing a B.S. in a natural resources-, environmental compliance-, or ecosystem science-related field.
Must have a valid driver’s license for operating federal vehicles, including cars and ATVs.
Must be able to pass a federal background investigation to obtain a Department of Defense Installation Access Pass.
The successful candidate must demonstrate U.S. employment eligibility; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.


DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
B.S. in a natural resources-, environmental compliance-, or ecosystem science-related field.
Experience using GPS equipment in the field
Experience using GIS software, including ArcGIS or ArcGIS Pro
Experience operating ATVs
Experience with wildlife or vegetation field surveys
Experience using hand tools
