MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Requires a high school diploma or GED.
Requires a minimum of five (5) years of experience in fire apparatus, police vehicles, automobiles, heavy equipment maintenance and repairs. Must have experience with diagnostics scanning tools or a closely related field.
Performs skilled work involving rules/systems but solves problems almost constantly.
Performs addition and subtraction, multiplication and division and/or calculates ratios, rates and percents.
Reads technical instructions, procedures manuals, and charts to solve practical problems; composes routine and specialized reports and forms; speaks compound sentences using normal grammar and word form.
Performs manual and technical tasks requiring a wide range of procedures and requiring intensive understanding of a restricted field or complete familiarity with the functions of a unit or small division of an operating agency; requires normal attention with short periods of concentration for accurate results or occasional exposure to unusual pressure.
LICENSE/CERTIFICATES:
Special Certifications and Licenses refer to state, federal, or professional certifications or licenses.
Requires a valid State of Florida driver license and a satisfactory driving record as a condition of initial and continued employment. Must have a State of Florida Class A CDL within six (6) months of employment. _____ (initials)
Must have and maintain a minimum of five (5) EVT certifications in fire apparatus within eighteen (18) months of employment.

SELECTION FACTORS
Nature of Work:
The purpose of the class is to maintain City motorized vehicles and equipment. The class is responsible for preventive maintenance, major and minor repairs, vehicle modifications, maintenance documentation, and parts inventories. The class works within a general outline of work to be performed, develops work methods and sequences under general supervision.
Essential Job Function:
The tasks listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional tasks related to the type of work of the class as necessary.
- Inspects vehicles and equipment and performs preventive maintenance.
- Performs highly specialized diagnostic and repair to fire pumps, governor systems, control valves and plumbing on fire apparatus to include aerial and ARRF.
- Installs and repairs emergency vehicle equipment for police and fire vehicles.
- Inspects, sets-up, and otherwise prepares new vehicles and equipment to be placed in service.
- Performs routine minor maintenance such as tire change, timing, adjusting, and lubricating.
- Performs major repairs such as engine overhaul or transmission repair or replacement.
- May perform vehicle modification such as installing or removing special equipment, or other modifications.
- May perform State safety inspections as required.
- Must have knowledge of NFPA standards.
- May train or advise less experienced personnel.
- Performs shop or area maintenance such as general clean up.
- Prepares documentation for maintenance activities such as repairs, parts used, cost, and other information.
- Provides advice and assistance to vehicle or equipment operators as necessary.
EXAMPLES OF MACHINES, TOOLS OR EQUIPMENT USED:
Hand tools such as wrenches, ratchets and sockets. Vehicle lifts, jacks and stands. Electronic scanners, laptop and volt meters.
