Description
The Northwest Suburban Municipal Joint Action Water Agency (NSMJAWA), a governmental organization, is seeking to fill a full-time, non-exempt, night-shift Operator position at the O’Hare Airport Main Pumping Station. The primary responsibility of this position is to operate and manage pumps and control equipment during a 12-hour overnight shift to supply water to seven (7) northwest suburban Chicago communities. Additional duties include performing routine general maintenance, custodial tasks, and responding to emergency situations as needed.
The starting hourly wage is dependent on qualifications and ranges from $31.82 to $38.39 per hour. In addition, the night-shift Water Operator receives a premium pay of $1.50 per hour and eight (8) hours of overtime each bi-weekly pay period.
WORK HOURS:
12-hr night-shift work, 7 PM – 7 AM. Working 36 hours in week one (1) and 48 hours in week two (2), resulting in eight (8) hours of overtime each pay period, including weekends and holidays.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Responsible for monitoring, adjusting, and troubleshooting the water control system; collecting water samples; and maintaining accurate records. Works under the general supervision of the Operations Manager but is often required to work independently.
Operates, assists in repairs, and performs maintenance on pumping station machinery and equipment, including electrical switchgear, motors, starters, variable frequency drives, pumps, valves, hydrants, compressors, internal combustion engines, generators, pneumatic controls, instrumentation, HVAC systems, and other electrical and mechanical equipment.
Demonstrates the ability to safely and effectively use hand tools, power tools, and testing instruments.
Works cooperatively with management to ensure a safe work environment and compliance with applicable environmental health and safety regulations, policies, and guidelines, including Illinois Department of Labor standards, OSHA, and other local, state, and federal safety requirements.
Performs additional duties and requirements as needed, including janitorial and general building maintenance tasks.
Willing to expand knowledge and skills by attending outside training and classes.
Self-motivated individual who can work independently while also being an effective team player.
Requirements
The position requires a high school diploma or G.E.D. and one (1) to three (3) years of experience in water or wastewater operations, industrial/manufacturing operations, or equivalent. A combination of water or wastewater experience with HVAC, electrical, or mechanical maintenance experience will also be considered. Knowledge of water chemistry, PLCs, or SCADA systems is a plus.
LICENSE:
A valid State of Illinois or equivalent driver’s license is required.
CERTIFICATION:
Possession of an Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) Class “C” or higher Public Water Supply Operator’s License is required. For continued employment, a newly appointed employee must obtain the IEPA Class “C” license within two (2) years of the appointment date.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND PROFICIENCIES:
Ability to make critical decisions and quickly master new skills as situations demand. Strong interpersonal and oral communication skills. Self-motivated and able to manage multiple assignments with competing priorities. A self-starter who requires minimal supervision. Must demonstrate excellent time management and documentation skills. Availability for emergency response, as necessary, is required.
