Residency in Equine Surgery
The School of Agricultural, Environmental and Veterinary Sciences, Charles Sturt University (CSU) and REC-Equine Specialists, are inviting applications for a three and a half year, fixed-term residency position in Equine Surgery, linked to a professional doctorate, commencing in July 2026.
The position will satisfy credential requirements for the American College of Veterinary Surgeons and completion of the Doctor of Veterinary Studies (DVStud). In this joint program, the successful candidate will receive advanced clinical training in equine surgery at the Veterinary Clinical Centre (VCC), CSU, Wagga Wagga and REC-Equine Specialists, Sydney under the direct supervision of five ACVS boarded surgeons. Additional training in related disciplines will be provided by specialists at both institutions and during external placements. In this joint program, the successful candidate will be exposed to a diverse caseload covering all aspects of equine surgery in the race/sports horse to the family companion. Outside of required rotations in allied disciplines and part of providing clinical (emergency) services, the successful candidate will also be exposed to aspects of equine reproduction, medicine and sports medicine, dentistry and anaesthesia.
The position will include involvement in clinic rounds, journal club and seminars. After-hours and on-call duty will be performed under the guidance of specialists. Residents participate in undergraduate student teaching and complete a clinical research project. Training in research methods, scheduled periods to dedicate to research, thesis writing and publication mentoring are provided.
This program is supported by state-of-the-art facilities and equipment, including laparoscopy, arthroscopy, laser surgery and therapy equipment, various advanced ultrasonographic machines and endoscopes (including dynamic systems), ophthalmic surgical instruments and equipment, computed tomography, digital radiography, nuclear scintigraphy, AO/ASIF fracture repair systems, high-speed treadmill, shockwave systems, methods of quantitative gait analysis, purpose-built intensive care and isolation facilities and access to veterinary diagnostic laboratories.
Requirements
To be considered for the DVStud program the successful applicant will have a veterinary degree registrable in New South Wales and a minimum of two years of veterinary professional experience which must include prior completion of an equine internship. (Applicants with one-year prior experience (i.e. internship) will also be considered but are required to enroll into a Masters program first.) A demonstrated interest in equine surgery and advanced written and verbal communication skills is essential.
The successful applicant will be enrolled as a full-time student in the DVStud program and receive a tax-free scholarship (minimum of $50,000 per annum), conference attendance support, and compensation for after-hours duties. Financial support is provided for the research project. An allowance for relocation is available.
