- Fresh Coast Intern
Description
The Fresh Coast Intern Team assists the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) in protecting local waterways and Lake Michigan through community outreach and the installation of small-scale green infrastructure (GI), such as rain barrels and rain gardens. They work to contribute towards achievement of MMSD's regional goal of capturing 740 million gallons of rainwater using GI. The interns will assist in planning, organizing, and attending community outreach events. Additionally, the interns will learn about GI including installation, maintenance, and design through hands- on experiences in the field. As a result, the interns will develop a practical knowledge of various GI strategies, native plants of Wisconsin, and the ability to effectively communicate this information to members of the public. The interns will also develop the organizational skills necessary to coordinate field work with MMSD staff, residents, and consultants.
Requirements
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The Fresh Coast Program is MMSD's ongoing GI planning and implementation effort. Through this program, two teams made up of three to four interns will assist in community outreach and installation of small-scale GI on public & private property in the City of Milwaukee and local Suburban communities. They will aid in GI maintenance at local schools/libraries, closing out projects, managing records, restocking supply inventory, updating databases with information gathered through outreach activities, and supporting residents. Lastly, the interns will be paired with MMSD professionals to work on independent research projects, and assist with GI workshops, outreach projects, and related office duties.
Qualifications:
One to two years of college or participation in a technical program related to water/environmental studies, civil engineering, landscape management, communication, sustainability, planning, or a related field; or considerable work experience in landscaping, construction, forestry, conservation, or green infrastructure installation and maintenance. Must be able to effectively communicate with a diverse audience. A valid driver's license and a good driving record at the time of application, during the selection process, and throughout the internship are highly preferred.
Supplemental Information:
This 12-week summer internship is full-time, Monday through Friday, 8:00 A.M. – 4:30 P.M. Occasional evening and weekend work required.
