TOWN OF GRISWOLDDRIVER MAINTAINER (HEAVY TRUCKS)
JOB DESCRIPTION
NATURE OF WORK: The Driver/Maintainer (Heavy Trucks) performs skilled, semi-skilled, and non-skilled work involving the performance of a variety of tasks relating to the construction, maintenance and repair of Town roads, bridges, grounds, buildings and recreational facilities. This position requires independent judgment, initiative, maturity, observation and communication skills, and accuracy.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: The Driver/Maintainer (Heavy Trucks) receives general direction from the First Selectman and regular work assignments and direction from the Road Supervisor, Working Road Foreman / Road Superintendent.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: None.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Operates heavy and light equipment including dump trucks, long tractor mowers, Vac Sweepers, payloader, backhoe, compressor.
Performs general work assignments including a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks laborer including, but not limited to, acting as groundskeeper, i.e., rakes grass and leaves, seeds and cares for lawn; cuts grass, weeds and brush by hand or power equipment; prunes or trims trees, shrubs, hedges and bushes; and gathers and removes litter and reports work accomplished to the Foreman.
Operates basic hand tools, power tools and equipment, i.e., chainsaws, power saws, leaf blower, brush cutters, rollers up to six (6) tons, chippers, jack hammers, pavement breakers, rooters, as assigned.
Completes pre-trip inspections and pre-trip maintenance.
Maintains and cleans all vehicles and equipment as required.
Responds to off-duty emergency calls.
Participates in snow removal operations. Drives snow plowing equipment and performs related duties as assigned.
Performs miscellaneous carpentry, painting, paint spraying, line and sign painting, and less-skilled masonry work, as needed.
Removes snow and ice from walkways, driveways, and parking lots and spreads salt in those areas.
Cleans gutters, sweeps streets, digs ditches, shovels materials such as sand, stone, etc., and spreads patching materials.
Ability to establish and maintain effective and courteous working relationships with Town Officials, public officials, the general public, supervisors, coworkers, and with people from other departments and agencies.
Ability to work a flexible schedule and ability to respond to emergency calls on a 24-hour basis.
Follows standard safety procedures and regulations.
Regular attendance is a requirement of this position.

QUALIFICATIONS PROFILE:
Knowledge, Skills and Ability
Knowledge of the operations of the Town's sweeper equipment.
Some knowledge of the practices and techniques of public works maintenance and construction work.
Some knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions associated with public works maintenance and repair projects.
Ability to follow both written and oral instructions and to organize and express thoughts and ideas, both orally and through written communication.
Ability to carry out assigned projects to their completion.
Ability to perform all duties and operate all equipment in lower classifications.
Ability to work independently in a responsible manner utilizing independent judgment.
Ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong. It does not involve solving the problem, only recognizing there is or will be a problem.
Ability to analyze information and evaluate the best solution for solving problems.
Ability to read and write English and to comprehend procedures, policies, documents and directives that are necessary to the safe performance of the job.
Ability and effectively present information in oneonone and small group situations.
Ability to read maps and/or to follow written and verbal geographic directions.
Ability to drive, maneuver, navigate or run vehicles or mechanized equipment such as forklifts and snowplows.
Ability to meet the demands of a flexible work schedule. Ability to work outside normal business hours as necessitated by the position, i.e. weather or disasters requiring the services of the Griswold Highway Department.
Ability to establish and maintain effective and courteous working relationships with Town Officials, public officials, the general public, supervisors, coworkers, and with people from other departments and agencies.
Education, Experience and Training
High School, Vocational School graduate, or equivalent experience. Minimum of two years of experience in the field of highway maintenance or construction work.
Criminal background and driving record checks required prior to employment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The physical demands here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently required to: hear; speak; stand; sit; walk; bend; twist; stoop; kneel; crouch or crawl; climb stairs to various levels; use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls; use wrists for repetitive motion; reach with hands and arms; uses hand and arms in handling, installing, positioning and moving materials and manipulating things; drive a truck or heavy equipment; operate a compressor - jackhammer; and tolerate exposure to environmental allergens.
The employee must have the ability to lift, move and otherwise manipulate, on a regular basis, up to sixty-five (65) pounds; lift, move and otherwise manipulate on an occasional basis up to one hundred (100) pounds with or without assistance.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works outside. The employee works near moving mechanical parts and in precarious places and is exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold, extreme heat, risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment ranges from quiet to extremely loud dependent upon the task or equipment being used.
Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distant vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee must have the ability to detect or tell the differences between sounds that vary in pitch and loudness. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate equipment.
Employees must be free from mental and physical disorders that would interfere with performance of duties as described, and have the mental capacity to handle stressful situations, physical danger and risk of serious injury to person and others. Ability to maintain his/her composure with the public and coworkers in everyday, stressful and emergency situations. Employees may occasionally have to function in situations where subjected to aggressive verbal behavior.
LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE:
Commercial Driver's License, "CDLB" (with tanker, air brake or combination endorsement) with a good driving record clear of any convictions for serious motor vehicle violations required.
