Assistant / Associate Curator of Education and Collections
Location: Morris Plains, NJ
The Stickley Museum at Craftsman Farms seeks a dynamic and scholarly Curator of Education and Collections to play a vital role in researching, preserving, and interpreting one of the nation’s most significant collections of American Arts and Crafts housed at the former estate of Gustav Stickley. This is a public facing curatorial position for which developing and teaching educational programs is a significant part of the work. Candidates who meet the requirements of either an Assistant Curator or Associate Curator are encouraged to apply.

About the Role
The Stickley Museum at Craftsman Farms seeks to fill a curatorial role with the title Assistant Curator or Associate Curator based on qualifications and experience. The ideal candidate will be responsible for the research, care, and growth of the Stickley Museum’s collection of decorative arts, including furniture, ceramics, metalwork, and textiles from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Additionally, you’ll be responsible for developing online courses throughout the year that engage existing constituents as well as attract new audiences. The ideal candidates will have a demonstrated record of teaching as well as curatorial work.
What You’ll Do
- Plan and deliver online courses, lectures, and presentations to varied audiences.
- Manage, research, and interpret the museum’s collection.
- Oversee the care and cleaning of the historic house museum.
- Build relationships with collectors, galleries, and donors to support acquisitions.
- Conduct scholarly research and publish related work.
- Collaborate with coworkers on museum projects and initiatives.
- Additional duties as assigned.
Requirements
What We’re Looking For
Associate Curator (level)
- Master's degree in art history, American Studies or related field.
- At least 3 years of curatorial experience, ideally in a collecting institution, focused on historic decorative arts.
- Proven success in organizing and teaching classes.
- Excellent communication, diplomacy, and relationship-building skills.
- Commitment to diversity, inclusion, and audience engagement.
Assistant Curator (level)
- Master’s degree in art history, American Studies, or related field (ABD/PhD preferred).
- 5 or more years of curatorial experience, ideally in a collecting institution, focused on historic decorative art.
- Proven success in developing and teaching classes.
- Excellent communication, diplomacy, and relationship-building skills.
- Commitment to diversity, inclusion, and audience engagement.
- Record of scholarly publications and / or presentations.
Physical and Environmental Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods; must be able to move throughout the facility and visitor areas.
- Ability to lift up to 30 pounds and assist with all guest service tasks.
- Flexibility to work weekends, holidays, and occasional evenings. Some travel may be required as part of this position.
- This is a full-time, exempt position, working onsite at SMCF.

Compensation & Benefits:
This is a full-time, exempt position with salary commensurate with experience and qualifications. Salary ranges between $55,000 to $65,000.
