Description
We are seeking an Aquatics Manager who will ensure animal husbandry in Zebrafish facilities at Johns Hopkins University performed in a manner compatible with all humane, legal, and scientific requirements. The Aquatics Manager is responsible for all aspects of day-to-day animal husbandry, purchasing and maintaining supplies and equipment, hiring, training, scheduling, and overseeing the animal care technicians. They are also to help with any lab work that is needed from lab membersSpecific Duties & Responsibilities
- Oversee all staff in the fish facility and in cage wash and animal care areas.
- Ensure that the sanitation and environmental features of the facilities are being maintained in compliance with animal protocols.
- Maintain the facility to meet U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal Welfare Act standards, the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, and other state, federal, and local animal welfare laws and regulations.
- Oversee the performance of all personnel using the fish facility.
- Assist in hiring, training, managing, and disciplining Animal Care Technicians.
- Assist in the development, scheduling, and implementing appropriate training programs for Animal Care Technicians and facility users. Responsible for performance and annual review of assigned employees.
- Oversee that all feed, cleaning of tanks, and other supplies needed for the zebrafish facility are ordered on a timely basis. Be proactive in suggesting changes to improve the efficiency and quality of operations.
- Troubleshoot problems when they arise and contact the lab director if the problem cannot be immediately remedied. Assist in designing and carrying out on-the-job training and orientation for aquatics care attendants.
- Ensure that all fish facility equipment is functional and appropriately maintained. Assure all records pertaining to equipment are documented and stored. Recommend and consult Lab Directors on equipment purchase and repair, facility improvements, management practices, etc.
- Responsible for developing the animal husbandry budget and monitoring expenditures for personnel, overtime, supplies, equipment, maintenance, etc.
Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Must be able to interact with research investigators and staff on animal care questions. Good oral and written communication skills.
- Good at time management and getting this done in the required time frame.
- In-depth knowledge of legal requirements and guidelines pertaining zebrafish animal care.
- Knowledge of cage washing standard operating procedures and able to perform the duties of all staff working under his/her supervision. Must have knowledge of water quality parameters.
- Exposed regularly to some exceptional conditions such as warm temperatures and long periods of standing or squatting. The ability to lift 50lbs while walking.
- Basic knowledge of how to use Excel and Word.
- Able to follow specific protocols on euthanizing zebrafish humanly. Must work well with students and facility users.
- Demonstrated abilities to train and supervise facility staff and users on standard fish protocols.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
- Five years related experience, including proven technical knowledge and laboratory experience.
- Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Fisheries, Waters or Aquaculture.
- 10 years of relevant experience.
- Experience in making decisions about facilities, research supplies, human capital responsibilities and coverage and other areas to ensure lab functions.
- Must be able to run the Aquatics Lab independently
- Must be able to lift 50 lbs. and carry while walking.
- Will be exposed regularly to exceptional conditions such as warm temperatures and long periods of standing or squatting.
